How to paint a radiator: preparation, primer, and an even finish
A radiator can be refreshed without removal if it is sound, completely cold, and the existing coating is firmly attached. Here is how to prepare the metal, deal with rust, choose a compatible primer, and apply the finish without runs.

First make sure the radiator is suitable for painting
Paint changes appearance but does not repair leaks, weak connections, or deep corrosion. Inspect the body, connections, and lower edge. If the metal is wet, visibly thinned, or the connections need repair, contact a heating professional first. A decorative coating must not hide a technical problem.
Check the old coating as well. A firmly bonded layer usually only needs cleaning and deglossing, while peeling paint must be removed back to a sound edge. In an older home where the previous coating is unknown, avoid creating dust through aggressive dry sanding; stop and determine the safe way to handle a potentially hazardous coating.
Turn off the heat and protect the surroundings
Schedule the work for a time when the heating can be reliably turned off. Shut down the radiator according to your system instructions and wait until the metal is completely cold. Do not dismantle valves or remove the radiator without the necessary competence; that is work on the heating circuit, not ordinary decorating.
Move nearby furniture away, cover floor and wall with robust protection, and mask valves, thermostat head, and air vent. These parts need to remain movable and identifiable. Ventilate when using products with noticeable odor, and follow the label and safety data sheet for hand, eye, and respiratory protection.
Cleaning matters more than an extra coat
Dust and household residue collect between sections and along the lower edge. First remove dry dust with a vacuum and narrow brush, then wash the surface with a mild cleaning solution. Rinse residues with clean water and let the metal dry completely. Paint applied over dirt is bonded to the dirt, not the radiator.
After washing, lightly degloss a sound glossy coating with a suitable abrasive. Remove loose areas carefully and feather the edges of old paint. Remove dust again afterward. The goal is a clean, dry, even, slightly keyed surface without weak areas, not necessarily completely bare metal.
Bare metal and rust need separate treatment
Small surface rust spots should be cleaned back to sound material and dust removed. Protect exposed metal with a compatible anti-corrosion primer. If corrosion returns from a joint, covers a large area, or the metal has thinned, cosmetic painting is not a reliable repair.
Do not assemble a coating system from random materials. Primer, intermediate coat, and finish must be compatible with one another, the old coating, and the radiator’s operating temperature. The safest check is the product technical data and direct manufacturer confirmation for the metal and radiator application.

Choose the coating for its intended use, not just its color
The can or technical description should explicitly state that the product is suitable for metal and permitted on radiators or can withstand their service conditions. A general interior paint may look right in color, but that does not confirm adhesion, heat resistance, or behavior when heated.
Compare the required primer, application method, recoat interval, and full cure time. Water-based products are often convenient because of lower odor and easier tool cleanup, but the specific product approval remains decisive. Check color with a physical sample too; a screen cannot show the exact sheen or how the tone shifts under different light.
Apply thin coats and work from difficult areas to flat surfaces
A narrow or angled brush is useful for sections and hard-to-reach areas; a small roller may suit flat panels if the coating manufacturer permits it. Paint inner edges, recesses, and sides first, then move to the front surface. This reduces the chance of disturbing an already leveled finish.
Load only a little material and spread it in a thin coat. Excess on vertical metal quickly turns into runs along the lower edge. Work in sections and maintain a wet edge, but do not repeatedly brush a coat that has started to set. Apply the second coat only after the manufacturer’s stated interval.
Let the coating cure before turning the heating on
A touch-dry surface is not necessarily ready for heat. Follow the instructions for recoating and full curing. Until then, do not return the thermostat head to normal operation, wash the radiator, or press textiles against it. Heating too early can damage the appearance and strength of the film.
After the permitted cure period, restart the system according to its instructions and observe the coating. An unusual persistent odor, softening, blistering, or color change is a reason to turn the heat off and consult the material manufacturer. Dispose of leftover paint and contaminated consumables according to local rules.
